UIAA ICE CLIMBING YOUTH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND EUROPEAN CUP IN OULU 24.-26.2.2023




Welcome to the Super Weekend of Ice Climbing: UIAA Youth World Championships, European Cup finals and Finnish Championships in Oulu, Finland! Competitors from all around the world take part in the three day competition. The Youth World Championships has lead and speed competition for three age categories. The European Cup is senior’s lead competition. Event is free of charge for spectators. We have worked hard to make some changes to the surrounding area, and this year the spectator stand for Speed Finals is better accessible with children's carriages and wheelchair.

At the competition site, there are heated tents, public toilets, and plenty of parking space. On Friday there will be exciting speed qualifications, on Saturday there will be lead qualifications for YWCH and for European Cup and Sunday we will see the exciting finals in all disciplines and categories. The best climbers will show their speed at the ice wall and we will see who will be able to climb to the top of the ice tower in lead climbing.

Terwa Foodtruck feeds all the competitors, volunteers and audience during the weekend. Check the Menu. There's also a small kiosk serving hot drinks and small snacks every day

Jääkiipeilyn superviikonloppu saapuu Ouluun! Tervetuloa seuraamaan jääkiipeilyn Nuorten maailmanmestaruuskilpailuja ja Euroopan cupin finaalia Oulun kiipeilyseuran jäätornille. Nuorten MM-kisoissa kilpaillaan leadissa eli vaikeuskiipeilyssä sekä nopeuskiipeilyssä kolmessa eri ikäsarjassa. Euroopan cup on aikuisten lead-kilpailu. Samalla ratkotaan myös Suomen mestaruudet. Kolmepäiväisessä kilpailussa nähdään sekä kansainvälisiä jääkiipeilyn kärkinimiä että suomalaiset lajin huiput, sekä paikallista väriä! Tapahtuma on yleisölle pääsymaksuton. Olemme ahkeroineet kisapaikalla, ja tänä vuonna Speed-katsomo on paremmin saavutettavissa myös lastenvaunujen ja pyörätuolin kanssa.

Perjantai-iltana on jännittävä karsinta nopeuskiipeilyssä jääseinällä. Lauantaina tarjolla on sekä nuorten että aikuisten lead-kiipeilyn karsinnat. Sunnuntaina nähdään kaikkien lajien ja sarjojen jännittävät finaalit, aamu alkaa nuorten nopeuskiipeilyllä ja sunnuntai-ilta huipentuu nuorten maailmanmestaruuskilpailujen lead-finaaliin.

Viikonlopun aikana kilpailijoiden, talkoilijoiden ja yleisön muonituksesta vastaa Terwa Foodtruck. Katso Menu. Lisäksi joka päivä paikalla on myös Finice-kioski.

COMPETITOR REGISTRATION

Register to the competition by buying the ticket in advance! All athletes should also register to the UIAA results service to the World Youth Championships or / and European Cup. Check who are already registered: https://uiaa.results.info/.

Age categories for the Youth World Championships:
U16: born in 2010 - 2008 (toprope and speed)
U19: born in 2005 - 2007 (lead and speed)
U21: born in 2002 - 2004 (lead and speed)
All European youth in age categories U19 and U21 are also welcome to participate in the European Cup with the same lead qualification. If you need a visa invitation, please contact [email protected] well in advance.

FINNISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nuorten MM-kilpailujen ja Euroopan Cupin yhteydessä kilpaillaan jääkiipeilyn Suomen mestaruuksista. Nuorten sarjojen osalta tulokset poimitaan MM-kisasta ja aikuisten sarjojen osalta Euroopan Cupista. Nuorten sarjoissa lajeina ovat lead/yläköysi sekä nopeuskiipeily. Aikuisten lajina on lead. Ilmoittaudu SM-kilpailuun kuten nuorten MM-kilpailuun tai Euroopan Cupiin ostamalla kilpailijalippu sekä ilmoittautumalla UIAA:lle. Lisäksi tarvitset Suomen Kiipeilyliiton kilpailulisenssin. Athlete registration is done through ticketing system by purchasing a competitor ticket.

Competitor

Competitor ticket includes competition fee, lunch at the competition site and entrance to the closing party. If you have a last minute ticket (bought at the 14.2 or after you have to bring your own food to the venue).

What on earth is Oulu?

The City of Oulu is the capital of northern Finland. The Oulu Region has about 250,000 inhabitants. Transport connections are direct and fast, regardless of the means of transport or direction. All main roads meet in Oulu. Oulu has an international airport and there are about 15 flights to and from Helsinki each day. In addition, you can fly direct from Oulu to Riga, Tampere, Rovaniemi and Kemi-Tornio. Oulu railway station is one of the busiest in Finland. What kind of services there are at the competition site?

At the venue, there will be music and other entertainment for the audience. There will be food market, public toilets, and plenty of parking space. For the competitors we will have some warm space, warmup facility and food available.

Will there be transportation between competition site and accommodation/city centre?

The competition site is about 12 km from the downtown of Oulu, 20 minutes by car. We are working on listing other transportation solutions. Stay tuned.

I'd like to climb in Oulu! What are the possibilities?

Oulu Climbing Gym (Oulun kiipeilykeskus) offers two boulder gyms and wide variety of indoor rope action. They also serve good coffee and have a small gear shop. At the top floor, there is also a famous sauna and hot tub department which you can rent. We recommend a visit to Oulu Climbing center to everyone interested in climbing! The competetitos, volunteers and the Finice community will also gather at the Oulu Climbing center for the Finice closing party.

The best place to ice climb in Finland is the Korouoma Canyon. It’s located in Posio, approximately 300 km from Oulu. Korouoma canyon has several (over 20) different ice falls in very beautiful surroundings and it’s also a famous location to just go hiking and enjoy nature. This year, the cooldown trip to Korouoma after the competition will be self-organized. If you need guidance to Korouoma Canyon, please contact Samuli Pekkanen ([email protected])

Finice sustainability – short version


We proudly present our sustainability plan for the competition organization. It gives us tools to:

  • Evaluate each decision we make from sustainability point of view
  • Review our old practices – the way we have always done things
  • Invent new practices where they are needed
  • Develop Finice competition to even better each year
  • Educate organisers – we all learn while making the plan and doing the planned actions
Our sustainability plan consists of four fields: Ecological sustainability helps us value our actions from ecological point. For instance, we calculate our carbon footprint and aim to minimize it. we also follow the plan while making food and material purchases and set up competition infrastructure. Our competition facility – the ice climbing tower, is a permanent structure. Ecological values are considered in maintenance and ice making.

Social sustainability emphasis the values climbing as a sport and a lifestyle will teach us: co-operation, responsibility of each other and connection to nature. Also, the meaning of Finice-competition to local climbers and Finnish climbing community is written down. We support equal opportunity and created our code of conduct to follow.

Creating the cultural sustainability plan set us a target to provide the competitors feel welcome and familiarize with the Finnish and local culture. While they travel to Oulu for the competition, the trip is more memorable and fruitful to all senses if there is more than just sports.

Finally, economical sustainability plan is a tool that helps us understand the economical meaning of the competition. In any case organizing competitions has impact on local economy because competitors use money while they stay in Oulu and Finland. Also, the competition budget is notable, and we can choose where and with who we do our purchases.
